MKJB gets new four-storey building

JEFRI Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) yesterday celebrated its 40th anniversary yesterday with a series of activities and ceremonies, including the foundation laying of the college's new four-storey building.

The college first began operations with the name Government Technical School, running the City and Guilds Certificate (CGC) courses in Basic Engineering.

The school was renamed to Jefri Bolkiah Engineering School in 1984, and it was in 1987 when the school attained its college status and renamed itself MKJB.

At that point in time, the school was already offering the Brunei Darussalam Technical and Vocational Education Certificates (BDTVEC), instead of the CGC.

Present as guest of honour for the anniversary celebration was Minister of Education Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Hj Abu Bakar Hj Apong, who laid the foundation for the college's new building, apart from participating in the activities.

According to the minister, the Brunei Technical and Vocational Education Council was a significant moment in the development of technical education in the history of the Sultanate, and ended Brunei's dependence on trade and the field technician certification from abroad.

The minister also stressed that the objectives of SPN21 is aligned with the rapid global economic growth, and the ministry expects a demand in employing technical and vocational school graduates to increase due to better economic activity.

Apart from a new building, the school also celebrated its achievement of attaining the International Quality Management System Standard Certification ISO 9001:2008 as a provider of professional engineering education and qualification.

The college is currently the second largest technical institution in the Sultanate, and is the only engineering college in the district. — Chua Guan CheongThe Brunei Times

MKJB students get RBN certificates

THE Royal Brunei Navy (RBN) awarded certificates of attendance to 23 Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) Marine Engineering students yesterday morning for successfully completing the "Damage Control and Leadership" course.

The four-day course included theory and practical sessions, and covers practice on basic fire fighting, use of fire fighting equipment, as well as doing practical damage control exercises using wedges to stem ingress of water as well as removal of water.

The team building and leadership tasks were designed to get the students working as a team and to improve their confidence in testing environments under pressure from both staff and peers.

Hj Md Sharifuddin Hj Md Salleh, Principal of MKJB, was on hand to present the certificates to the students.

During his welcoming speech, the principal hailed the relationship between MKJB and RBN, which he said dated back to 1985 when MKJB first started its Marine Engineering Certificate courses, whereby RBN helped to facilitate by providing assessors to assess the Marine's Final Year students' project.

My Ambition

As a normal person, i'm also have my own ambition. My ambition is to become an engineer. It is not just an ambition but i want it to become a reality to my life. It is true that years of hard work are required to become an engineer, but after of three years of college studying engineering, you can make good money. In fact, engineering is one of the few fields that let you earn good pay after only three years. Right now, three years might sound like a long time, but it's worth it. Consider it one of the best investment you can make. Besides, it's not all about the money. It is also an interesting work.

Engineering is a very broad field. There are so many types of engineering, that there is bound to be one you find interest in. Since science and technology are constantly expanding, there will always be new problems to solve-you'll rarely be bored. Unlike other jobs that require you to do the same thing over and over, the work of engineers greatly varies.

In engineering, you will find yourself constantly finding new ways to solve problems. If you truly want to be an engineer, the challenges you will face will just make things more interesting. Overcoming obstacles will help sharpen your mind, helping you deal with problems not only in engineering but in life as well.

In facing challenges, you will be encouraged to "think outside of the box" and explore new possibilities. This need to creativity makes engineering even more exciting.

There's no better feeling than the feeling that you accomplished something great. In engineering, you're doing just that. Imagine looking at a bridge that you helped design or picking up a new invention that you created.

Engineering is all about making things people can use and making life better for everybody. As an engineer, you will be able to see that you're actually making a difference in the world.

There is indeed great strength in diversity. Engineering requires many different perspectives to find a single workable solution. You have the power to show the world what you can do. Don't always follow the crowd-show people that you are unique but just as capable as anyone else.
