MKJB boys defend school's honour

THE boys of Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) saved the day for their school in its sports day by beating Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School (SVSB) and Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School (SVNR) in the male 4 X 100m invitational relay last Saturday at the RBLF 3rd Batallion Sports Complex in Lumut.

SVSB was looking to do the double over MKJB in the invitationals, with their girls' 4 X 100m relay team beating two MKJB teams earlier with a time of 1 min 7.8 sec to snatch gold from under their noses.

Both SVSB and SVNR relay teams were looking strong and fresh coming onto the tracks, compared to the two MKJB teams, who looked slightly drained after having to put in a full day's effort since 7.30 in the morning.

With the school's reputation at stake, the MKJB boys rose up to the challenge, under the support of the whole stadium to deny SVSB a clean sweep in the invitationals, which were considered by most as the highlight of the sports day.

The MKJB boys, from the Orange House, clocked 45.74 seconds to beat SVNR's 48.09s and SVSB's 48.22s. SVNR was later disqualified due to a fault during the baton passing process between the 3rd and 4th runner.

Key to MKJB winning the male student invitational relay was Muhd Haziq Hj Awang Harun, a national runner for the Sultanate, who together with his teammates, won the day for their school through a smooth baton passing race.

Muhd Haziq could also be credited for almost winning the 4 X 400 relay for the Orange house singlehandedly.

Having lost their best 400m runner in Redzali Nain through a hamstring strain in his men's 400m winning effort, it was up to Muhd Haziq to lead his team, and he lived up to the expectations.

Running the third leg, with his team trailing by almost 100m, the MKJB speed king amazingly sprint through his round, not only overtaking the leading Red House runner, en-route to giving his team a lead of almost 100m, going into the last leg.

The easy job was then left to his teammate to wrap up the relay title for the Orange House.

Redzali, despite his hamstring strain, decided to risk aggravating his injury to run in the invitational relay, sparking MKJB's win over the other schools in the event.

Results of yesterday's track events were added to the results of field events held earlier on Wednesday in the same sports complex to decide the overall winner.

At the end of the day, Red House was crowned the overall Champion after winning 14 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze. Orange House came in second with 10 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze. Black House and Blue House came in third and fourth respectively.
