THE five-day Oil and Gas Service Sector Job Fair 2011 received great public response, especially jobseekers, as it came to a close yesterday with more than 5,000 curriculum vitae (CV) were received from jobseekers.
"(This sets) the number of total CV received at over 5,500 over the last five days and at least twice as much visitors, underlining the emphatic and encouraging response from the public to the unprecedented oil and gas employment showcase," said a statement received from Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd (BSP) yesterday.
Since it was launched on December 13, the job fair began from 12pm to 8pm.
The job fair which was launched on December 13, was sponsored by oil and gas operators and service companies in the industry, targeted to recruit about 1,000 workforce in the Sultanate by 2012.
In an interview with the event's Media and Publicity Staff, Suriani Garip said a total of 79 companies in the industry, nine of which are oil and gas operators in the country, participated in the fair.
Due to an encouraging number of jobseekers coming to the fair, the number of walk-in interviews had to be increased from only six booths on the first day to 13 booths.An exhibitor representing Seadrill Sdn Bhd Chia Kok Vei said that at least 637 people have signed the guestbook.
"Of the total number, nearly 400 visitors have submitted their CV," said Chia.
He said that the company, a Norway-based leading offshore deepwater drilling company, will be hiring more locals and providing them with training.
Another representative from Petronas Carigali Brunei Ltd, Camelia Mohiddin said she received about 200 CV per day since the first day of the event.
On the last day of the fair yesterday, a talk titled "Strengthening Foundations" was held for the visitors and jobseekers.
Among the speakers were prominent people in the Brunei's oil and gas sector such as Laila POKSDSS Hj Saleh from Lysens, Shamir Salahudin from Brunei Shell Petroleum, Dk Adimasyaton Pg Omarali from Brunei LNG and Ziana Hj Mahmud, English instructor and Public Relations Officer at Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB).
A representative from the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) also gave a talk on with the topic on "Training and Development Opportunities."
The talk gave an overview of the department's efforts in strengthening the foundations of the nation's human resource capacity building.
Among other issues which were highlighted were the new schemes the "Dana Sumber Manusia" (Human Human Resource Development Fund), which includes Training and Employment Scheme (SLP), Technical & Vocational Education Scholarship ( BPTV ) in local private institutions, and Human Resource Capability Development Scheme in the private sector.
"These (schemes) aim to give support to those wishing to continue their studies further such as applying for degrees and masters," the statement read.
The Oil & Gas Job Fair will be followed up by roadshows in January, February and March next year, in a bid to reach to greater audience.
The job fair is part of the government's long-term initiative to create at least 50,000 jobs in the energy field by 2035, providing the locals to participated in the industry so that they will make up 70 per cent of workforce in the energy sector.
