Students learn about oil operations

PLANT and Engineering students of the Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering (MKJB) visited the Marine Construction Yard (MCY) in Belait yesterday as part of the Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Services Campaign to provide the local students with the opportunity to acquire knowledge on the company's operational sites for the local and oil and gas market.

The educational visit was hosted by BSP's major sub-contractor, SKSWood Sdn Bhd, and was participated by a group of 22 students of the engineering college along with their facilitator, Tauqir Ahmed Waraich.

Upon arrival, the visitors were welcomed by the company's Human Resources Manager, Marjorie Toidy. This was followed by a welcoming speech delivered by the company's Operations Manager, Calvin Tan.

In his speech, Tan highlighted that the main aim of the educational visit was to expose the operations of the company on MCY to the students. The purpose of the day's visit was also to inform the students on the company's overall operations of the company.

Besides providing information on the company's operations, the visit was also aimed to give encouragement to the local students to opt for a career in the industry that brings in the largest revenue for the country.

The morning briefing which was held at Serikandi Restaurant proceeded with talks on SKSWood's operations by Head of Supply Chain Benjamin Trinidad, as well as on the company's Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) policies and safety precautionary measures on the MCY by Giovini Tongson, an HSE officer.

According to SKSWood Human Resource Officer, Maeve Chong, who is also an organiser of the visit, the visit targets local students to expose them to the knowledge of the local industries and its potential in generating revenue.

SKSWood is currently Brunei's largest subcontractor to BSP in the field of provision of goods and services relating to offshore construction and maintenance, including construction engineering, mechanical and structural fabrication, installation and instrumentation activities.

The students present for the briefing also included trainees from BSP. (NJA1)
