MKJB boys defend school's honour

THE boys of Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College (MKJB) saved the day for their school in its sports day by beating Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School (SVSB) and Nakhoda Ragam Vocational School (SVNR) in the male 4 X 100m invitational relay last Saturday at the RBLF 3rd Batallion Sports Complex in Lumut.

SVSB was looking to do the double over MKJB in the invitationals, with their girls' 4 X 100m relay team beating two MKJB teams earlier with a time of 1 min 7.8 sec to snatch gold from under their noses.

Both SVSB and SVNR relay teams were looking strong and fresh coming onto the tracks, compared to the two MKJB teams, who looked slightly drained after having to put in a full day's effort since 7.30 in the morning.

With the school's reputation at stake, the MKJB boys rose up to the challenge, under the support of the whole stadium to deny SVSB a clean sweep in the invitationals, which were considered by most as the highlight of the sports day.

The MKJB boys, from the Orange House, clocked 45.74 seconds to beat SVNR's 48.09s and SVSB's 48.22s. SVNR was later disqualified due to a fault during the baton passing process between the 3rd and 4th runner.

Key to MKJB winning the male student invitational relay was Muhd Haziq Hj Awang Harun, a national runner for the Sultanate, who together with his teammates, won the day for their school through a smooth baton passing race.

Muhd Haziq could also be credited for almost winning the 4 X 400 relay for the Orange house singlehandedly.

Having lost their best 400m runner in Redzali Nain through a hamstring strain in his men's 400m winning effort, it was up to Muhd Haziq to lead his team, and he lived up to the expectations.

Running the third leg, with his team trailing by almost 100m, the MKJB speed king amazingly sprint through his round, not only overtaking the leading Red House runner, en-route to giving his team a lead of almost 100m, going into the last leg.

The easy job was then left to his teammate to wrap up the relay title for the Orange House.

Redzali, despite his hamstring strain, decided to risk aggravating his injury to run in the invitational relay, sparking MKJB's win over the other schools in the event.

Results of yesterday's track events were added to the results of field events held earlier on Wednesday in the same sports complex to decide the overall winner.

At the end of the day, Red House was crowned the overall Champion after winning 14 gold, 10 silver and 11 bronze. Orange House came in second with 10 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze. Black House and Blue House came in third and fourth respectively.

MKJB Launches `Let's Go Green' Programme

Kuala Belait - Jefri Bolkiah College of Engineering (MKJB) yesterday morning launched the 'Let's Go Green MKJB 2012' programme in a bid to create environmental awareness and promote green practices among the staff and students of MKJB.
Attending as guest of honour to officiate the event was the Acting Deputy Director of Technical Education, Cikgu Hjh Mariah binti Hj Abd Manaf.
The Acting Principal of MKJB, Awg Habib Mohamad bin Hj Wan Junaidi in his welcoming speech said the three-day project was initiated by the Learning Centre Department in its efforts towards creating awareness on earth-friendly issues as well as to support the initiatives of His Majesty's Government to increase environmental awareness among the public. He noted that MKJB acknowledges the significance of sustainable practices for the improvement, protection and care of our environment.
He added that various activities were lined up for the three day event. One of the activities is 'One Student, One Tree' Programme in which each student will plant a tree at the college premise and be responsible for his or her plants.
It does not only serve to increase the number of plants to preserve the green environment, but it also provides an opportunity for students to experience the benefit of landscaping and tree planting as an initial step towards being a responsible member of the community.
"By nurturing awareness through experiential learning activities, students will carry the information they acquired to their respective homes and will continue integrating the green mentality and culture into their everyday practices."
As part of MKJB Let's Go Green initiatives, there will be talks, exhibitions and information booths on health and environmental practices such as the three R's (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) concept.
He also added that MKJB will extend the project beyond the campus gates by engaging in a series of community service programmes such as beach cleaning at Pantai Jubilee, cleaning at Kg Pandan Mosque and the Islamic cemetery grounds, as well as volunteering to clean and renovate Pusat KACA Kuala Belait on the second day of the three-day event.
MKJB will also continue to actively engage in environmental care activities in the future such as cleaning the mosque on a weekly basis and setting up the MKJB Eco Club.
From an Islamic perspective, the colour green also symbolises nature and life as stated in Surah al-Insan verse 21 of the Quran, which stated that the inhabitants of paradise wear green garments of fine silk. The Acting Principal also highlighted that there are more than 700 verses in the al-Quran that exhort believers to reflect on nature.
He therefore stressed that "it is our civic duty to promote the green culture and trend for the future generation and also to educate the current generation on preserving the environment."
At the launching ceremony yesterday, guests viewed a video presentation and also witnessed the presentation of recycled bins by the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).

My Ambition

As a normal person, i'm also have my own ambition. My ambition is to become an engineer. It is not just an ambition but i want it to become a reality to my life. It is true that years of hard work are required to become an engineer, but after of three years of college studying engineering, you can make good money. In fact, engineering is one of the few fields that let you earn good pay after only three years. Right now, three years might sound like a long time, but it's worth it. Consider it one of the best investment you can make. Besides, it's not all about the money. It is also an interesting work.

Engineering is a very broad field. There are so many types of engineering, that there is bound to be one you find interest in. Since science and technology are constantly expanding, there will always be new problems to solve-you'll rarely be bored. Unlike other jobs that require you to do the same thing over and over, the work of engineers greatly varies.

In engineering, you will find yourself constantly finding new ways to solve problems. If you truly want to be an engineer, the challenges you will face will just make things more interesting. Overcoming obstacles will help sharpen your mind, helping you deal with problems not only in engineering but in life as well.

In facing challenges, you will be encouraged to "think outside of the box" and explore new possibilities. This need to creativity makes engineering even more exciting.

There's no better feeling than the feeling that you accomplished something great. In engineering, you're doing just that. Imagine looking at a bridge that you helped design or picking up a new invention that you created.

Engineering is all about making things people can use and making life better for everybody. As an engineer, you will be able to see that you're actually making a difference in the world.

There is indeed great strength in diversity. Engineering requires many different perspectives to find a single workable solution. You have the power to show the world what you can do. Don't always follow the crowd-show people that you are unique but just as capable as anyone else.
